Emerging story
Texas has been suffering from an unusually cold snowstorm this year, which left many Texans without power and heat. Senator Ted Cruz has been widely criticized for his response, particularly his fleeing to Cancun, Mexico. His home had lost power like other Texans.
Michael Hardy, a Houston-based journalist, drove to Cruz’s neighborhood to investigate. He found Cruz’s house to be dark (although his neighbor reported that power had come back the night before) and a little white poodle was standing by the front door. He took a picture and shared it in a tweet. Hardy later wrote an article titled, “Ted Cruz Abandons Millions of Freezing Texans and His Poodle, Snowflake” for New York Magazine.
Misbar’s Analysis
It’s undisputed that Sen. Ted Cruz left Snowflake at home, in a house that most likely had no heat for at least a night. Cruz wasn’t in Texas when the picture was taken. However, Snowflake was not fully abandoned. In Hardy’s article, he mentions speaking to a security guard, who stated that he was taking care of the poodle. It’s unknown whether or not someone else was there.
