Emerging story
A meme with the words, “God has no authority in the House of Representatives,” attributed to Nadler, went viral on social media following a February 25, 2021 House meeting.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found that Nadler did not say the alleged quote.
During the House meeting, representatives discussed the Equality Act, which ultimately passed. Representative Greg Steube said, “The gender confusion that exists in our culture today is a clear rejection of God’s good design. Whenever a nation's laws no longer reflect the standards of God, that nation is in rebellion against him and will inevitably bear the consequences.”
In response, Nadler said, “Mr. Steube, what any religious tradition describes as God’s will is no concern of this Congress.”

While the implication of what Nadler actually said may be viewed as similar to the quote used in the viral image, he did not say that “God has no authority in the House of Representatives.” Since the meme has the alleged quote in quotation marks, thus implying it is a direct quote and not an interpretation, we rate this claim as fake.
