Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar discovered that Rush Limbaugh died of advanced lung cancer according to the New York Times.
According to the U.S. Sun, Limbaugh said he started smoking cigarettes as a teenager, and it is uncertain if he ever quit smoking completely. He reportedly gave up cigarettes after he went through a particularly bad battle with bronchitis in the 1980s; however, he was a well-known cigar enthusiast who long defended tobacco use. He appeared on the cover of a cigar magazine in 1994.
Smokers are far more likely to get cancer than nonsmokers. According to the American Lung Association, smoking contributes to 80 percent and 90 percent of lung cancer deaths in women and men, respectively. Men who smoke are 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer. And cigars as well as cigarettes can be dangerous. According to the National Cancer Institute, cigar smoke, like cigarette smoke, contains toxic and cancer-causing chemicals that are harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers. Cigar smoke is possibly more toxic than cigarette smoke. It has a higher level of cancer-causing substances, more tar, and a higher level of toxins.
However, according to the American Cancer Society, not all people who get lung cancer smoke. As many as 20 percent of people who die from lung cancer in the United States every year have never smoked or used any other form of tobacco. Lung cancer in people who have never smoked is one of the most fatal cancers in the United States.
