The Claim

Former President Donald Trump claimed Senator Ted Cruz as a dependent on his tax forms.

Emerging story

On February 25, 2021 The New Yorker published an article called “TRUMP'S TAXES REVEAL HE CLAIMED TED CRUZ AS DEPENDENT.”

The claim soon went viral on social media.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the claim comes from a satirical source. The New Yorker’s Borowitz Report is self-proclaimed satire; the thumbnail of the article social media users shared even says “NOT THE NEWS.”

Further, to claim an adult as a dependent, they must either be a close relative or must live with the person filing taxes. Since Cruz is not related to Trump, and does not live with him, Trump would not be able to claim him on his taxes.

Trump’s taxes are currently under review with New York prosecutors and have led to much speculation. However, the claim that he put Cruz as his dependent on his taxes is satire.
