The Claim

The COVID-19 vaccine causes Alzheimer’s Disease.

Emerging story

A paper published in a scientific journal claims that the mRNA vaccines that target coronavirus could cause diseases like Alzheimer's.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar discovered that in a paper published in the journal Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, the author Dr. J. Bart Classen reported that mRNA-based vaccines can mis-fold proteins in the body that are linked to the development of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s Disease. Classen is known for his past anti-vaccination views.

The journal Microbiology & Infectious Diseases reports itself to be a peer-reviewed journal. However, in the methods section of Classen’s paper (the methods he used to arrive at the conclusion) consists of only three sentences: “Pfizer’s RNA based vaccine against COVID-19 was evaluated for the potential to convert TDP-43 and or FUS to their prion based disease causing states. The vaccine RNA was analyzed for the presence of sequences that can activate TDP-43 and FUS. The interaction of the transcribed spike protein with its target was analyzed to determine if this action could also activate TDP-43 and FUS.”

This lack of explanation about how his experiment was conducted is unusual. Most often, a very detailed explanation of methods is included in a scientific paper, and often even in the abstract of the paper. It is therefore difficult to understand what experimental controls Classen used or what evidence he has to support his ideas.

To date, over 250 million doses of vaccines have been given around the world. So far, the vaccine appears to be safe. However, there is no long term safety data for the newly developed vaccines, because the vaccines were just developed within the last year.
