Fox News host Sean Hannity made a comment on Joe Biden’s stutter during a segment discussing a recent appearance of the President. Hannity claimed that Biden’s stutter didn’t develop before “2016 or 2012,” asking “when did this problem start to emerge?” He went on to speculate on the President’s mental health, questioning whether or not Biden is fit to govern the United States.
Misbar’s Analysis
Hannity is one of many public figures to criticize Biden’s speaking ability and to hypothesize over his cognitive ability. Regardless of whether or not he is operating at his full mental capacity, one thing is for certain: Biden has always had a stutter.
Biden’s stutter has been what he calls a lifelong struggle. Evidence from as early as 1994 of him discussing the difficulty of having a stutter is readily available. During his early life Biden had great difficulty with public speaking, and was only able to raise himself to the level of his peers through practice and determination. Stuttering is not curable per se, and there are multiple factors which affect it, but can be treated and mitigated.
