Emerging story
On Tuesday evening, rapper Cardi B and right-wing political commentator Candace Owens got into an argument on Twitter. It began after Owens criticized Cardi B’s recent Grammys performance on Fox News. During the exchange, Cardi B posted a screenshot of an alleged tweet from Owens which stated, “Yes my husband did cheat on me with my brother. Yes, he said no when I asked to join them.” Owens laughed at the “clearly photoshopped tweet” and implored Cardi B not to spread slander.
Numerous Twitter users picked up on the rumor.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation showed no evidence that the Tweet was real. The screenshot originally appeared in November of 2020, and was apparently created by an angry fan when Owens criticized singer Harry Styles. Owens publicly denied any validity to the Tweet and stated it was an obvious photoshop. She and Cardi B both threatened lawsuits against each other.
Parts of the Internet are archived in various databases which are searchable by the public. Not everything is archived but posts by celebrities and public figures are often preserved. Six instances of Owens' Twitter page were archived on the date of the alleged Tweet, and none of them mention her husband cheating.
Finally, one Twitter user pointed out the questionable format of the supposed Tweet. On the bottom it says “View Tweet activity” which should not be visible on someone else’s account.
Tweets from celebrities are faked all the time and there are even services that specialize in doing so. Many people fall for fake tweets, articles, and headlines, even celebrities.
