The Claim

An American newborn is the first baby in the world to be born with Coronavirus antibodies.

Emerging story

A claim has been circulating on social media and online news publications here and here that a baby was born already carrying Coronavirus antibodies. The claims add that this is the first case globally and that the newborn was born in Florida in the United States of America.

Misbar’s Analysis

The Misbar investigation found the tweets and some of the headlines selective. While this may be the first case of a child born with antibodies due to his mother vaccinated, it is not the first case in the world of a child being born with antibodies. In March 2020, three Chinese babies were born with Coronavirus antibodies after their mothers became infected with the virus during their birth and a Singaporean baby in November 2020 and a Bulgarian baby in January 2021.

Reuters reported the transmission of the new coronavirus from mothers to newborns is rare, doctors from New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center said in October in JAMA Pediatrics.

Therefore, given that minimal emphasis placed on the fact that the newborn only received the antibodies through his mother’s vaccination, the Misbar team finds the claim to be selective.
