Emerging story

This isn’t the first time that rumors of Tom Hanks’ death have spread across the internet. This claim may have been resurfaced because of this Instagram post, which currently has over 2,300 likes.

The post alleges that Hanks had publicly died from COVID-19 but in actuality was “executed” last May. Why or how Hanks was executed is unexplained. The post also states that Hanks’ son left social media. It doesn’t say which son.

These rumors were spread all across social media. It’s probable that many of these posts were being facetious, but they are posts nonetheless.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar's investigation found that Tom Hanks definitely is not dead. He did contract COVID-19 last year, but he recovered. Moreover, the article in the Instagram post is fake. The article was taken off of News24’s website, but it was archived. At the bottom of the page, it says “Disclaimer: this is satire.”

Not only that, but Hanks has been seen in public since May of last year. He hosted President Biden’s official inauguration. That’s about as public as you can get. Lastly, at least one of Tom Hanks’ sons, Colin Hank, has an active Twitter account.
