Emerging story
As COVID-19 has upended daily life throughout the world, people have been anxious to hear vaccine news. The steady stream of news and content has created significant amounts of vaccine misinformation.
This week, a range of websites began reporting on a COVID-19 vaccine in pill form, leading to excitement and suspicion of rumors.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation has discovered these claims to be true. A range of respectable news organizations, including Insider, The Times of Israel, and WebMD have covered the story that a creation of a COVID-19 vaccine pill is in the early stages of development.
A March 19th press release from the Israeli-American pharmaceutical company Oramed announced that it has formed a joint venture with India’s Premas Biotech called Oravax Medical Inc., to develop COVID-19 vaccines in a pill form. However, it may be a long time before they become available.
The company has already conducted successful animal studies, which showed that their oral vaccines promote immunity. In the second quarter of 2021, the company will conduct a clinical study on humans. This could take almost a year, and possibly longer. The first COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials took place in March 2020, and took just less than a year for their release.
