Emerging story
Grammy award winning rapper Lil Nas X, who has been making headlines for a controversial music video, launched a new pair of shoes this week, which are priced at $1,018. These “Satan Shoes,” are revamped Nike Air Max ‘97s and were created in partnership MSCHF, a company well-known for supporting many viral products.
According to MSCHF, every shoe contains at least a single drop of human blood. Of course, it is no surprise that these shoes received an alarming amount of interest. All 666 pairs were sold out within a minute of their release.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found claims that these shoes were part of a collaboration with Nike to be false. (Although a spokesperson from MSCHF confirmed that each pair truly does contain human blood.)
In a Sunday statement to The New York Times, Nike said: “We do not have a relationship with Little Nas X or MSCHF. Nike did not design or release these shoes, and we do not endorse them.”
They have also pursued legal action and have filed a lawsuit against MSCHF. The suit claims that MSCHE has committed trademark infringement by using Nike’s logo and branding in the shoes’ sale and production. Nike has also requested that the shoes be destroyed and that they be compensated for previous sales.
