Last week, Facebook user Fred Hamill posted, “Ted Cruz says owning a gun should be as hassle free as owning a car which as I recall requires a license and registration.”
The Facebook post was shared thousands of times. A similar Twitter post gained even more attention the next day.
Some posted their own iterations.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation reveals no instance of Senator Ted Cruz stating that gun ownership should be as easy as owning a car. Cruz is a high-profile Republican senator from Texas whose appearances in the news lately have not been favorable. Documentation of his actions and words abound, so surely this instance would have also been recorded. A rigorous search of the Internet exposed no results. If Ted Cruz ever stated this, it went undocumented.
On March 23, Senator Cruz spoke before a Senate judiciary committee. On the same day, Twitter user @JDogindy posted the following, along with a link to footage of the hearing.
The tweet offers a response to Senator Cruz’s remarks calling proposed new gun legislation in reaction to mass shootings “ridiculous theater.” The original tweet received very little apparent attention but is the first mention of Ted Cruz in correlation with gun and car ownership. Without any proof to the contrary, available evidence points that the original tweet may have been misconstrued and spread ad infinitum.
