The Claim

The COVID-19 vaccines cause pregnancy complications.

Emerging story

While there are a large number of claims made about vaccine side effects, this particular claim may come from an article written by the Daily Expose. The article, titled “Number of women to lose their unborn child after having the Covid Vaccine increases by 366% in just six weeks,” was shared on social media.

The article asserts that pregnant women have 300% more miscarriages after receiving the vaccine. The article takes data from UK’s Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to make its case.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the article draws the wrong conclusions from the MHRA’s data, either forgetting or ignoring the context of the data. First, the data pool went from 7.1 million vaccinated people to 22.7 million – that’s over a 300% increase alone.

Second, miscarriages are fairly common; 10-20% of pregnancies end in a miscarriage. The Mayo clinic also says that the number is probably higher than that, as many miscarriages are unreported. The Daily Expose’s article makes no note of these facts.

Neither the CDC nor the FDA says that the vaccines cause pregnancy complications. The Daily Expose does not mention this either.

Further, recent studies show that the vaccines are safe for pregnant women to receive and may even protect the baby from becoming infected with COVID-19.
