Commotion: Vaccines and Worsened Periods

The Claim

People inoculated with a COVID vaccine may have a more difficult menstrual cycle.

Emerging story

Recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine have reported flu-like symptoms, sore arms, and a myriad of other effects. Recently, some women on Twitter have reported experiencing heavier periods after getting inoculated.

Some women said that their periods began earlier, too. One reported that she had started her period 2.5 weeks before her usual time. These tweets were written about on various websites, including the Daily Mail and Health.

Misbar’s Analysis

As of yet, there’s no sufficient evidence that supports the claim. While further research may support it, doctors have come up with some reasonable explanations that aren't COVID vaccine-specific.

One said that stress can make periods come earlier. Getting a vaccine can be stressful, due to side effects and the news surrounding them. Another doctor said that the side effects caused by vaccines can compound with those caused by periods, such as cramps.  It may also be worth noting that vaccines tend to cause harmful side effects to women more often than men.
