Emerging story

In April 2021, Dejywan Floyd was arrested for shooting and killing Julie Eberly in what appears to be a road rage incident. Soon after news of his arrest, the claim that he is related to George Floyd went viral.

Misbar’s Analysis

George Floyd was a Black man who was killed when police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds, igniting international protests against what many saw as police brutality and racist policing practices.

Misbar’s investigation found that Dejywan Floyd and George Floyd are not brothers or even likely to be related. While they do share a last name, so do between 66,000 and 97,000 people the U.S.

Dejywan Floyd is not mentioned in George Floyd’s obituary, which includes his known surviving family members. George Floyd grew up in Houston, Texas and then lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota before his death. Alternatively, Dejywan Floyd resides in Lumberton, North Carolina – far away from both Houston and Minneapolis. 

We also reached out to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the Dejywan Floyd shooting. They said that they have no records indicating a relationship between Dejywan Floyd and George Floyd.

Dejywan Floyd has been charged with first-degree murder and discharging a weapon on occupied property.
