The Claim

April 24 is “National Rape Day.”

Emerging story

The claim originated from a TikTok video that has since been taken down. It was spread on TikTok in mid-April and soon took off across social media platforms.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the original video allegedly features six men discussing “National Rape Day” and inviting people to rape others, particularly women, on April 24.

Following a slew of social media users and politicians reacting with horror and disgust, TikTok asked its users to report any content promoting the disturbing event.

There is, of course, no actual “National Rape Day," and the initial video is thought to be the work of internet trolls. However, many are concerned that someone may take the fake event seriously and use it as an opportunity to commit sexual violence. Groups have allegedly been set up on WhatsApp and other social media platforms promoting the event.

According to RAINN, 1 of every 6 women and 1 of every 33 men in the U.S. have been the victim of rape or attempted rape.

The event appears to be just a disturbing internet hoax, so we rate this as commotion. Misbar wishes everyone safety on April 24.
