The claim went viral after a Foot Locker in Minneapolis was damaged during protests about Daunte Wright’s killing by police on April 11, 2021.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found that while Foot Locker did pledge $200 million to “fight racial inequality and injustice and enhance the lives of the Black community.” However, “the commitment is to many communities and organizations, not to one nonprofit or group.” Their efforts mainly include working with Black-owned businesses and brands and funding education initiatives.
Further, according to BLM’s tax records, Foot Locker has not donated to the organization.
Minneapolis is currently experiencing high levels of conflict, as the Wright shooting occurred during the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial. Chauvin is charged with the murder of George Floyd.
