The Claim

Onion with a pinch of salt cures COVID-19.

Emerging story

A COVID-19 home remedy is trending online. Social media users claim that eating raw onions with salt can cure COVID-19.

Misbar’s Analysis

No evidence or study proves that eating raw onions with salt can cure COVID-19 in 15 minutes. According to National Onions Association, many studies have linked onion consumption with increased immunity. Still, the strain COVID-19 is so new that there have been no studies specific to onions and coronavirus.

The World Health Organization stated that there is no current scientific evidence suggesting that home remedies, specific foods, or dietary supplements prevent, treat, or cure COVID-19.

Health Desk reported that onions have some antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory qualities, but studies are limited. To date, there are no studies that evaluate onions as a therapy for COVID-19, and there is no scientific evidence to suggest that onions will prevent, treat, or cure COVID-19.

Misbar’s team didn’t find enough evidence to support the circulating claim. Therefore, the claim that eating raw onions and salt can cure one of COVID is false.
