The Claim

A March, 2021, European Union database shows that 3,964 people have died as a result of coronavirus vaccines and hundreds of thousands have been injured.

Emerging story

In March, 2021, EudraVigilance, a medical safety monitoring site located in the EU, uploaded four studies on coronavirus vaccines. Shortly after this upload, a conspiracy theory website claimed that these reports proved that at least 3,964 people had died due to the coronavirus vaccines. The site also claimed that the vaccines had led to at least 162,610 vaccine related injuries.
According to this site’s own metrics, the report has gained over 3,900 Facebook shares and 200 Twitter posts by April 26th, 2021. Additionally, a range of other websites have reported the death and injury rates as truthful.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation has discovered that it is incorrect to claim the deaths listed in the table are due to the coronavirus vaccine.

Instead, as EudraVigilance stresses, the events that caused the deaths or injuries after the coronavirus vaccine are not conclusively linked to the vaccine. The source is measuring deaths that occured after patients had taken the vaccine, regardless of cause. It is doing this for the purpose of further evaluation and scientific assessment.

In fact, the number of deaths listed on the EudraVigilance website is consistent with the number of people in the U.S. who have been vaccinated and died of causes unrelated to the vaccine. The CDC has stated that as of April 19th, 2021, 3,486 of vaccinated people have died in the U.S. (The European Union population is higher than the U.S. population, which highlights why EU deaths would be slightly higher in the March reports than the U.S. deaths from one month later.) The CDC has not detected patterns in the causes of these deaths that would indicate a safety problem with COVID-19 vaccines. The U.S. has not detected anything suspicious with a similar death rate, suggesting that there is no reason to suspect that the coronavirus vaccine has caused deaths in Europe.

Even the Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca vaccines have not been proven conclusively to have caused any deaths as of April, 2021. A CDC panel has stated that the Johnson & Johnson may be linked to the blood clot deaths of three women. The AstraZeneca vaccine, which is not used in the USA, may be linked to 19 deaths, a UK regulator has found. However, another study has stated that coronavirus itself is 8 to 10 times more likely to cause blood clots than any vaccine.

This shows that instead of causing 3,964 deaths, the vaccines may have been linked to 22 deaths, and only three of those deaths may be due to a vaccine that is being administered in the U.S.
