Emerging story
Images circulating on social media claim that Bobi Wine will swear in as president of Uganda on May 12th. The images circulating are screenshots of BBC and Aljazeera videos, with the headline “Uganda’s Bobi Wine set to sear in not Museveni” and “Uganda’s Bobi Wine set to swear in as next president of Uganda,” respectively. Users share their joy and congratulate Wine on the win.
Misbar’s Analysis
The Misbar investigation found this claim to be fake. Research on both Aljazeera and the BBC websites did not show any news related to the circulating. No other credible news sources reported on the claim. On the contrary, the BBC had reported that Wine lost the Ugandan presidency and reported that he disputed the results before withdrawing the disputes based on corruption. Moreover, upon closer inspection of the images, small details can be seen, like misalignments of the headlines. The text on the Aljazeera headline also appears to have two different fonts and weak grammar, such as Uganda not being in capital letters, as seen below.
A reverse image search using Tin Eye also showed that the BBC anchor image has been in use as a meme since 2015, as shown in the image below.
Given the findings, the Misbar team can confirm that these images were fabricated and fake news. Wine will not be swearing-in to become Uganda’s president.
