Several influential social media users posted claims that an audit in Arizona found illegal votes. The posts were then shared and liked by thousands of followers.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar discovered that the social media posts are referring to an election audit in Maricopa County, Arizona, which began on April 23, 2021. Nearly six months after President Joe Biden won Arizona by nearly 10,500 votes and Maricopa County by over 45,100 votes, auditors are set to hand count 2.1 million ballots in the county according to USAToday.com. The audit is taking place at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, in Phoenix, where subpoenaed election materials were delivered April 21 and April 22, 2021.
According to the Arizona Republic, the reason for the audit is Republican state senators still have questions about the validity of the general election results in Maricopa County. The audit involves recounting ballots, and examining the ballots, the county's voting machines, and the county's voter information data.
At the time of writing, May 2, 2021, no results from the audit commissioned by Republicans in the state Senate have been released. The recount could stretch beyond May 14, 2021, which is when it originally was estimated to conclude. Senate audit liaison and former Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett said there was "no deadline" for the audit and that the recount may need to be paused May 14 when Veterans Memorial Coliseum is reserved to host several Phoenix high schools' graduations. The audit would resume about a week later, Bennett said, adding that the Senate has talked with state fair officials and has permission to use the space "for as long as we need it" after the graduations.
No results from the Arizona voting audit have been released and there is not an exact date known of when the audit will be complete.
