Emerging story
In March, a range of conspiracy theory websites ran articles that claimed that Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, was calling for the creation of the New World Order, a conspiracy theory that believes groups of elites are building an authoritarian world government. These reports claimed that the Pope would utilize the pandemic to enact this sinister plan.
Further conspiracy claims appeared in April when a letter appeared on the Vatican’s website that was addressed to the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund. Some of the websites reported that this letter held evidence that Pope Francis would replace the financial system with a “green financial agenda” and enslave people who have the coronavirus vaccine.
These claims then circulated on social media, where they gained hundreds of interactions.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation has discovered that in a March, 2021, interview, Pope Francis did use the phrase “new world order,” but he is not calling for the New World Order in a form that fits the definition of a tyrannical world government. Specifically, the interview uses the phrase in response to a question on how to avoid wasting the opportunity to improve the world as it emerges from the pandemic. The exact quote is as follows:
“Instead, we can heal injustice by building a new world order based on solidarity, studying innovative methods to eradicate bullying, poverty and corruption, all working together, each for their own part, without delegating and passing the buck.”
It is also worth noting that this interview was originally conducted in Italian, and that the phrase “new world order” came out of the translator’s interpretation of the pope’s original words.
Additionally, the letter that was addressed to the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, does not call for either group to form a totalitarian New World Order. Instead, it calls for, “new and creative forms of social, political and economic participation.” The letter states that the pope believes that there is a need for a global plan to create new institutions and regenerate other institutions. Yet the letter also states that the purpose of these institutions would be to build an improved network of sustained international relations. It is likely that the pope is referring to the strengthening of institutions such as the United Nations, which primarily exists to prevent war and affirm human rights.
In no part of the letter does the pope request for the World Bank Group or International Monetary fund to replace the global financial system with a green alternative. Instead, he asks for the financial industry to deal with global ecological debts and the debts of poorer countries by investing in sustainability.
Nowhere in the letter does the pope mention enslaving vaccinated people. Instead, he asks leaders to provide vaccines for all.
Popes are far less powerful in the present day than in previous centuries. As The Washington Post notes, the Pope’s authority over nations has been in decline ever since 1804, when Napoleon chose to coronate himself as the Emperor of France by literally snatching the crown from Pope Pius VII’s hands.
