Misbar’s Analysis
MENA: Misbar has discovered that, according to BBC.com, tensions between Israel and the Palestinians spiraled in recent days. The tensions have been escalated by a clash over land in an East Jerusalem neighborhood. The flashpoint originated in the predominantly Palestinian neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, where Israelis claim to own the property on which mostly refugee Palestinian families have lived for decades. According to the Washington Post, the Israeli settlers, who call the area Nahalat Shimon, are trying to displace some 70 Palestinians in what they call an effort to reclaim their ancestral land.
Hamas reportedly fired dozens of rockets into Israel on Monday, after hundreds of Palestinians were hurt in clashes with Israeli police at a flashpoint religious site in the contested holy city. The rocket fire drew heavy Israeli retaliation in the Gaza Strip. Health officials said at least 28 people, including nine children, were killed in the fighting, making it one of the bloodiest days of battle between the bitter enemies in several years, according to the Associated Press health. International media sources are blamed for biases in the reporting of the situation.
The U.S. Secretary of State has called for a de-escalation of the current situation.
