The Claim

Palestinian boy cannot close his eyes due to shock caused by Israel’s airstrikes.

Emerging story

A viral video circulating online shows a Palestinian boy allegedly unable to close his eyes again due to the shock caused by Israel’s airstrikes. Along with the video is a post that says that no one is talking about the mental health of Gaza people, adding that even if they survive death, they cannot survive the trauma.

Misbar’s Analysis

MENA: Misbar’s analysis shows no scientific backing to support the claim that a child loses the ability to close his eyes due to shock.

According to the Health Line, the term “shock” may refer to a psychologic or a physiologic type of shock, and a traumatic event causes psychologic shock. It is also known as an acute stress disorder. It also states that the body experiences shock when it does not have enough blood circulating through the system to keep organs and tissues functioning properly.

On the other Medscape Onnd, Medscape says a delay in recognizing and quickly treating a state of shock results in anaerobic metabolism, tissue acidosis, and a progression from a compensated reversible state to an irreversible state of cellular and organ damage. However, no example points directly to the inability to close one’s eyes.

A further check on the probity of the video shows that it is not from the current Israel-Palestine face-off as it appears in this 2018 video shared by Al Ard Doc Film Festival on Facebook and this Jan 2019  documentary shared by El Pais on youtube. The claim, therefore, is misleading.

Hamas, a military sect in Palestine, has been embroiled in an exchange of firepower with Israel, with rocket launches from both ends. According to Aljazeera, the violence that erupted about a week, the violence that at least 200 Palestinians, including 58 children, killed in the Gaza Strip as Israeli bombardment now enters the second week. There are have been calls for a cease-fire, but Israel’s Netanyahu says Hamas has crossed a red line.
