MENA: News circulating that Egypt had suggested a ceasefire between Palestine and Israel. Users and news websites claim that both Palestinians and Israelis agreed on the suggestion.
Misbar’s Analysis
The Misbar investigation found the claim to be fake. Upon investigating credible news sources, it was unveiled that neither Hamas nor Israel had agreed to a ceasefire on Thursday morning while there are many mediatory efforts. Ezzat Al Rishq, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, denied the news reported by Aljazeera and a statement released on his Twitter account, as can be seen below, explaining that “no agreement was reached nor specific timings.” All the news about the ceasefire appears from sources not related to Hamas or Palestinians.
Senior Israeli officials have signaled to local outlets that fighting between the two sides, which began last Monday, is coming to a close. However, Israel has not set a timeframe either to end attacks on the Gaza Strip, despite intense diplomatic efforts from several countries to reach a ceasefire, including over 60 phone calls with the US in the past week. According to Egyptian security forces, both sides agreed in principle to a ceasefire. However, negotiations are still being held in secret.
While the US has shown public support for Israel and refused to condemn civilian deaths, President Biden has taken a firmer tone and applied more pressure in private with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the violence.
