Emerging story
Anthony Bouchard, a Wyoming state senator, was recently accused of impregnating a 14-year-old girl when he was 18. On Facebook Live, he admitted to it.
In an interview with the Star Tribune, he further elaborated that they married the following year, when he was 19 and she 15. Wyoming state law allows minors to marry adults with parental consent. The two divorced a few years later; shortly thereafter, she died from suicide. The Star Tribune has elected not to identify her.
Misbar’s Analysis
Bouchard said of the situation: “So, bottom line, it’s a story when I was young, two teenagers, girl gets pregnant. You’ve heard those stories before. She was a little younger than me, so it’s like the Romeo and Juliet story.”
The Facebook Live video is below.
Misbar’s investigation found that in many states, an eighteen-year-old having sexual relations with a fourteen-year-old is considered statutory rape. Currently, it is illegal in Florida, where the events took place. It was and is illegal in Wyoming.
Bouchard is one of Sen. Liz Cheney’s GOP challengers. She is a controversial figure within her party, as she voted to impeach former president Trump.
