The Claim

The Cairo Tower in Egypt was lit up to reflect the Palestinian flag.

Emerging story

A viral image on social media, with wide circulation on Facebook and Twitter. The image depicts the Cairo Tower lit up to show the Palestinian flag in solidarity. The most common accompanying caption is “You don't have to be a Palestinian to love Palestine. Cairo tower lighting with the flag of Palestine”.

Misbar’s Analysis

MENA: Misbar's investigation found the claim to be fake. A reverse image search revealed that the original image was uploaded on a Wikipedia entry on the Cairo Tower, without the flag.

The original image, as seen below, was uploaded on 3 February 2010 by Ahmed Santos captioned “Cairo Tower at night,” as can be seen below on the image details.

The circulating image with the flag has been fabricated, as seen below.

However, the investigation did not reveal the Cairo Tower was reported to lit the Palestinian flag. Given the findings, the Misbar team confirms the claim is fake, and the image was doctored through editing programs.
