Commotion: Matt Gaetz Presidential Run
The Claim
Representative Matt Gaetz will run for president in 2024.
Emerging story
The claim went viral in late May 2021.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found that in a text message to the New York Post, Gaetz wrote: “I support Donald Trump for president. I’ve directly encouraged him to run and he gives me every indication he will. If Trump doesn’t run, I’m sure I could defeat whatever remains of Joe Biden by 2024.” He further said to Steve Bannon that he would “whoop Joe Biden up one side of the country and down the other.”
Gaetz, who is staunchly pro-Trump, is currently being investigated by the Department of Justice for allegedly sex trafficking a child. Federal authorities recently entered into a plea agreement with his associate Joel Greenberg and have secured the cooperation of Gaetz’s ex-girlfriend. Gaetz has denied the claims.
While there are no legal obstacles to a criminal becoming president of the United States – a candidate could actually run while incarcerated – experts believe that political limitations would prevent anyone convicted of a severe crime from a successful run.
Further, Trump recently told associates that he will run in 2024 if he is healthy enough.
Since it appears that Gaetz’s potential presidential run will be curbed by his alleged criminality as well as Trump’s likely run, we rate this claim as commotion.
