Commotion: Politician Responsibility for Capitol Riot
The Claim
Politicians will be held responsible for the January 6 Capitol riot.

Emerging story
As a follow-up to the events of January 6, Democrats in the U.S. Senate proposed that an independent committee be formed in order to thoroughly investigate the events of that day. Although they received some support from a few divergent Republican senators, the commission ultimately failed to receive enough votes after it was filibustered. After seeing this, many politicians and ordinary citizens took to social media to condemn politicians for failing to take responsibility.
Misbar’s Analysis
The assault on the Capitol that took place earlier this year left many people shocked and disturbed. With five people killed, more than one hundred injured, and numerous break-ins to the capitol building, there are still answers to be found.
Some have gone as far as to suggest that certain politicians were directly complicit in organizing or funding the January 6 attack, allegedly knowing fully that it would result in violence and deaths. These claims remain largely conspiratorial, with little hard evidence to back them up. Although the suggestions that January 6 was an “inside job” remain on the fringe, there are still many politicians and citizens who wish to hold members of Congress accountable for any responsibility they may have had for the riot.
Many Democrats, including Senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Andrew Cuomo, are determined to hold their Republican colleagues accountable for any responsibility they may have had for the riot. Politicians such as Ted Cruz and Mitch McConnell have faced continuous backlash for having encouraged Donald Trump’s claims of a rigged presidential election, which directly resulted in the out-of-control demonstration on January 6. Nearly six months later, and new tweets from McConnell and Cruz are still flooded with comments condemning them for recklessly promoting dangerous rhetoric.
Since no legal action has yet found certain politicians responsible for the riot, we currently rate this claim as commotion.
