Emerging story
Around the middle of May, users on social media shared a screenshot of a tweet allegedly written by Hillary Clinton.
Clinton’s alleged tweet is referencing the fate of Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison following his arrest for child sex trafficking. “Epsteined” refers to the conspiracy theory that Epstein was murdered by government officials. Attorney General William Barr called the death a suicide.
Misbar’s Analysis
This tweet has been altered from its original. On May 7th, her real account tweeted, “It's pretty simple: Get vaccinated. Get your life back,” along with contact information for vaccine resources. It has the same format and the same snappy syntax as the fake version.
Clinton isn’t exactly known for using dark comedy and slang, so phrases such as “get Epsteined” are unlikely to show up on her Twitter. Just to make sure, we used PolitiTweet to check the archives of her account, and found that no tweets contained the word “Epsteined.”
A few people interpreted Clinton’s tone as threatening in her original tweet. They seemed to interpret her tweet as if she was saying that if you don’t get vaccinated, you won’t get your life back. That may explain the intention behind the fake screenshot, but it’s hard to say for sure.
