MENA: According to Palestinian news agency WAFA, Israeli police have detained activist Muna al-Kurd, who has been at the forefront of the campaign to stop the forced expulsions of Palestinians from occupied East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
Her brother Mohammed al-Kurd was arrested hours later, according to footage posted by their friends on Twitter.
The Israeli police detained activists of #SaveSheikhJarrah & #SaveSilwan. The Silwan neighborhood in Jerusalem is the southern stronghold of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, as more than 700 Palestinians are threatened with forced displacement. Israeli police also detained Zuhair Rajabi and Iyad Abu Sneineh from Silwan.
Displacement threatens 86 Jerusalemite families, some 750 to 800 people living in 15 buildings in the Batn al-Hawa neighborhood of the East Jerusalem area of Silwan. The Ateret Cohanim settler organization claims their houses. The situation in Batn al-Hawa is reminiscent of the events in Sheikh Jarrah, which fanned the flames of the recent armed confrontation between the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and Israel from May 10 to May 20.
The arrest on Sunday of the Palestinian activists was the latest move by the Israeli police to suppress several days of tension in one of the most sensitive neighborhoods in Jerusalem.
Israeli Authorities did not comment on the reason for the detentions.
