The Claim

Trump was golfing on Memorial Day 2020, instead of fulfilling the presidential duty of honoring American fallen veterans.

Emerging story

On the days following Memorial Day 2021 a range of social media accounts began posting memes and claims that former President Trump golfed on Memorial Day 2020. Many used this to demonstrate current President Biden’s different approach to the presidency, stating that Biden instead spent Memorial Day 2021 honoring fallen soldiers.

These social media posts gained hundreds of interactions.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation concludes that it is false to state that former President Trump spent Memorial Day 2020 golfing. Reports showed that the then president participated by initially visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Later in the day, he visited the site of the Battle of Baltimore, which occurred during the War of 1812. The president also made a speech honoring America’s servicemembers.

The people who spread the false claim that Trump golfed during Memorial Day 2020 may have gained this impression due to reports that he spent time golfing during Memorial Day weekend 2020. It is true to state that he golfed during this weekend, with him being sighted at his Virginia golf course Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day. This had been the first sighting of Trump on a golf course since March 8th, 2020.

In 2021, President Biden spent two days of Memorial Day weekend participating in activities related to the occasion. On the Sunday before Memorial Day, he visited his son’s grave, who was a veteran, in New Castle, Delaware. On Memorial Day itself, Biden visited Arlington National Cemetery and gave a speech honoring America’s servicemembers.
