Emerging story
On June 1, U.S. President Joe Biden said, “I hear all the folks on TV saying, ‘Why didn’t Biden get this done?’ Well, because Biden only has a majority of, effectively, four votes in the House and a tie in the Senate with two members of the Senate who vote more with my Republican friends.”
His quote insinuated that moderate Democratic senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema vote with Republicans more than with Democrats. The claim soon went viral across social media.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar concluded that while Sinema and Manchin do vote with Republicans more often than other Democrats, they still vote with their party the majority of the time. As of June 6th, 2021, Manchin and Sinema have voted with Biden 100% of the time.
Looking back to 2020, Manchin voted against his party’s majority 38.5% of the time while Sinema did so 33.1% of the time. When you take their lifetime voting record into account, Manchin and Sinema have voted with their party more often than not.
