A Twitter user tweeted President Buhari is attempting to run for a third term or cause a civil war.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation did not find any evidence to support the circulating claim. Social media users tweeting the claim refer to the President’s statement during the briefing of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Chairman, Professor Mahmud Yakubu, on Tuesday, July 1st. He had assured the INEC Chairman that the commission’s demands to operate efficiently ahead of the 2023 general elections would be held.
The President said, “I have assured INEC that we will make available to them everything they need to operate efficiently, so that no one will say we do not want to go, or that we want a third term. There will be no excuse for failure. We will meet all of INEC’s demands.”
Users insignificantly relied on the fact that the president mentioned a third term during his response at the briefing because there is a third term in the pipeline. One of the ways he hopes to achieve this is to facilitate another civil war against the Igbos.
Misbar, however, cannot verify the circulating as it lacks information.
One of the significant issues that have been on the front burner is the agitation of the Igbos to be given a shot at the presidency as they remain the only ethnic group yet to produce a president. The younger generation of southeasterners has increased their clamor for self-rule, saying they prefer a breakaway and an actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra.
A recent directive to observe sit-at-home on May 31st issued by the self-styled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to mark the 54th anniversary of Biafra recorded a 100% compliance as south-easterners deserted the streets and economic activities grounded.
President Buhari is not planning a third term for himself.
