Emerging story
Referencing a safety data sheet, social media users are claiming that the Moderna vaccine ingredient SM-102 is toxic.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar found that the SM-102 found in the Moderna vaccine is safe for humans. The ingredient is an inactive lipid excipient used to deliver the mRNA to a person’s cells. The lipid was assessed by the FDA and determined to be completely safe.
The safety data sheet that is being referenced on social media is for a solution of SM-102 in chloroform. On the second page of the sheet, you’ll see the message “Hazard-determining components of labeling: Chloroform,” indicating that the ingredient of concern is chloroform, not SM-102.
The National Library of Medicine lists no hazards for SM-102 while listing the same hazards for chloroform as the Caymen Chemical safety data sheet.
