In response to a tweet by Ron Kind regarding the American Rescue Plan, Republican Candidate Derrick Van Orden Tweeted “[Ron Kind] Has spent more $ in 100+ days than was spent fighting WWII, setting the country on the road to record inflation that will destroy our senior's retirements. Now he thinks he is a hero for spending their great grandchildren's $ to cover up for his incompetence. No.” Orden’s claim was repeated across social media.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar concluded that the claim that the American Rescue Plan cost more than World War II is inaccurate. The second world war was the most expensive war in US history. According to Norwich University, World War II cost an astounding $4.1 trillion, amounting to 37.5% of the US GDP at its peak.
The American Rescue Plan that Ron Kind supported cost a total of $1.9 trillion. Therefore, World War II cost $2.2 trillion more than Biden’s rescue package.
The American Rescue Plan of 2021 was passed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and included $1,400 in direct payments to Americans, tax credits, small business support, and unemployment insurance.
