Emerging story
Many on social media are reporting that Queen Elizabeth chose a sword over a knife to cut her birthday cake. Some are wondering if she was in a sound state of mind or if a knife was not made available to her.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar discovered when asked to cut a ceremonial cake to celebrate work by volunteers, Queen Elizabeth, at 95 years old, chose to do it with a large ceremonial sword. According to Royal Central, the Queen was offered the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall’s sword for the job.
According to CNN.com, just before stabbing the cake, the Queen was heard saying, "I don't think this is going to work." According to Today.com, when the Queen was told that there was a knife available if needed, she responded, “I know there is!” The Queen then proceeded to cut the cake with the sword. She added, “This is something that is more unusual.”
The Queen is no stranger to using the sword ceremoniously. According to the Royal Collection Trust, in the ceremony of knighting, the knight-elect kneels on a knighting-stool in front of The Queen, who then lays the sword blade on the knight's right and then left shoulder. In her almost 70 years on the throne, she has knighted hundreds of loyal subjects and foreign citizens.
