The Claim

The CDC released data showing that 7 out of 10 Americans are declining the COVID-19 vaccine.

Emerging story

In summer 2021, an image was widely shared with the text: “Turns out CDC quietly released data showing that 7 out of 10 Americans are declining the experimental gene therapy. While the world is trying to convince you you’re on the fringe of humanity you’re actually in the majority.” This information soon went viral.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the assertion that 7 out of 10 Americans are declining the vaccine is false. According to the CDC, by June 2021 more than half (53%) of all Americans have already received at least one dose and 44.6% are fully vaccinated. Therefore, 70% of Americans are definitely not refusing to get vaccinated.

That being said, vaccine hesitancy means that the number of Americans getting vaccinated has been on the decline since April. According to polls, a quarter of Americans are still unwilling to get vaccinated. Republicans tend to be less likely to get vaccinated than other demographics, with 41% (compared to 4% of Democrats) refusing to get their first jab.
