The Claim

President Biden is lying about Officer Brian Sicknick’s death during the January 6th capitol riot.

Emerging story

Since the events that took place in the United States capital on January 6, the cause of capitol Officer Brian Sicknick’s death has been contested. Social media users have been asking for clarification, and have repeatedly claimed that President Biden lied when stating that the officer died by the hand of January 6th protestors.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s analysis revealed that, according to medical examiners, Officer Brian Sicknick did not die from blunt force trauma. Early claims that he was accosted with a fire extinguisher and died from injuries sustained are not true. Interviewed medical examiners went on to state that Officer Sicknick may have succumbed to a reaction caused by a chemical irritant, but it is still under investigation.

Claims of Sicknick being the officer in the following screenshots created the fuss. Still, the events surrounding his actual death leave much open for speculation, and experts have not yet reached any conclusions.

NBC News reported Sicknick’s death caused by a series of medical emergencies: a  blood clot caused two strokes for the 42-year-old. He later died from what was ruled “natural causes” because of damage to his body from the strokes. The cause of the blood clot has not been released, and the Chief Medical Examiner, Francisco Diaz, stated that there was no evidence of a reaction to chemical irritants.

This seems to directly oppose the statement released by the Capitol Police earlier, directly following Sicknick’s death: “Officer...Sicknick passed away due to injuries sustained while on-duty.” This statement was made, however, before the Medical Examiner had time to complete his preliminary report.

The Capitol Police Department did not immediately amend their original assumptions about his death. The department said that while they accept the examiner’s findings, “this does not change the fact Officer Brian Sicknick died in the Line of Duty, courageously defending Congress and the Capitol,” according to NBC news. Sicknick was laid in honor in the Capitol Rotunda after his death, a ceremony given to only five other people
