Emerging story
George Soros spends billions of dollars supporting progressive causes around the world via his Open Society Foundations group (OSF). This has caused him to become the subject of many conspiracy theories. One theory asserts that he is banned from six countries and thus is an enemy of the public.
Specifically, he’s allegedly banned from the Philippines, Russia, Turkey, Poland, Pakistan, and Hungary, the place of his birth. The origin of this theory may stem from a conspiracy YouTube channel, but it’s hard to know for sure.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar's investigation found that Soros isn’t banned from entering the countries mentioned. While Google search results do mention his organizations being banned in certain countries, nothing mentions Soros himself.
Russia disallowed the OSF from operating, but hasn’t targeted Soros; and the OSF in Turkey voluntarily ceased operations following President Erdogan's anti-Semitic comments about Soros.
In Poland, a political activist associated with Soros was expelled from the country after criticizing the government for its anti-democratic measures. The OSF in Pakistan was told to cease operations, but nothing was said about Soros in particular. In the Philippines, a fake-news site alleged that President Duterte has a bounty on Soros. Otherwise, there’s no evidence suggesting that he or his organizations are banned from the country.
In Hungary, the government has taken extensive action against Soros, even issuing “Stop Soros” laws. Still, he hasn’t been banned from entering.
