The Claim

A video depicts a huge crowd welcoming President Buhari in Borno.

Emerging story

A video currently trending online claims to be footage of a huge crowd welcoming President Muhammadu Buhari to Maiduguri during his one-day official visit to the state on June 17, 2021. Initially posted by journalist Dele Momodu, it was also published by GoldmyneTV and other social media users. GoldmyneTV's post amassed more than 120k views and over 1k comments on Instagram in less than 24 hours.

Misbar conducted a reverse image search using stills from the trending video, and found that it is actually an old video being recirculated.

The original video is from February 2020, when the President visited Ondo state and was booed. The video was published by BBC News Pidgin on February 25, 2020.

A similar incident happened in Borno on February 12, 2020, when angry youths booed Buhari, saying that he had failed them.

President Buhari did visit Borno to assess its security situation. During the visit, he met and interacted with serving and wounded soldiers in the state. Before his visit, the state government implored residents not to boo him this time around.
