Emerging story

On June 18, 2021, The Babylon Bee published an article called “California Public Schools Ban Teaching of Critical Thinking.” The article soon took off on social media, with many treating it as factual.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the article is satire. As we have discussed before, The Babylon Bee is a satire publication.

The first line of the article shows that it is a humorous response to the recent public discussion of teaching critical race theory: “As more and more states announce bans on critical race theory, California is pushing the other direction, and has just passed a ban on teaching any kind of critical thinking in public schools.”

Just in case, however, we looked at California’s core curriculum and found that the state is still teaching critical thinking in its schools. In fact, the state has its own Critical Thinking Skills Test used nationwide.
