Hawaii Will Continue to Accept Out-of-State Driver’s Licenses
The Claim
Hawaii will no longer recognize out-of-state driver’s licenses.
Emerging story
On June 15, the Facebook group “The State of Hawaii” posted about a change to Hawaii’s laws that would make out-of-state driver’s licenses invalid.
The post claims the legislature was prompted because the majority of accidents in Hawaii are created by “people that didn’t learn to drive here” and do not possess the “Drive with Aloha” mentality. Social media users wanted clarification.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found the claim to be fake. Hawaii’s current legislation on reciprocal driver licensing says that anyone 18 years or older with a driver’s license from any other state can get a Hawaii license. The requirements for out-of-state licensing are listed on each county’s separate page and out-of-state licenses are still acceptable for converting to a Hawaiian driver’s license in all cases. No upcoming changes are listed.
The originator identifies themselves as a provider of entertainment on Facebook. Other posts purport that students will be taught flat earth theory in Hawaii schools, which is not true, and that Hawaii’s governor has been using a Magic 8 Ball to help with decisions, which is also not true.
