Emerging story
Following Nnamdi Kanu's re-arrest announcement, several social media users claimed he was arrested in Kenya.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s analysis found the circulating suspicious. There is no evidence to support the validity of the claim. The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, announced on Tuesday that the IPOB leader was intercepted through the collaborative effort of Nigerian intelligence and Security Services. He, however, did not state where Kanu was arrested.
On Wednesday, Nnamdi Kanu’s brother Kingsley Kanu revealed that he was captured in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria.
The Kenyan government, however, denied having any involvement in the arrest of the IPOB leader. In a press release issued by its High Commissioner in Nigeria, Amb. Wilfred Machage said Nnamdi Kanu was not arrested in Kenya.
With Kenya’s denial, the claim remains suspicious.
Kanu fled Nigeria in 2017 shortly after he was granted bail during his trial for treason. The federal government had prosecuted him for threatening the unity of Nigeria through IPOB, which he founded in 2014 to agitate for the sovereign state of Biafra.
