Emerging story
In late June and early July, a meme began circulating on social media that includes a clip from a news update, accompanied by the following text: “McDonald’s is giving out experimental MRNA inoculations to children.” The footage shows a child sitting in a McDonald’s restaurant rolling up his arm to get the vaccine. The child participating in an interview, stating that the vaccination was convenient and that it was a bonus to get free food.
People who have posted this clip online have stated that McDonald’s is giving out a “death shot” to children along with similarly alarming claims. The clips have gained thousands of interactions.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation concluded that the social media posts that accompany the news clip are false. The child in the clip is receiving a coronavirus vaccine, and it is incorrect to state that these vaccines are “experimental inoculations” or “death shots.” As the CDC states, the coronavirus vaccines are safe and effective. They are also under the most intense safety monitoring effort ever conducted in U.S. history.
The child in the clip looks young. However, the voiceover states that he is 13-years-old. This means that he is old enough to receive the Pfizer vaccine, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has approved for children as young as 12.
By June 28th, over 324 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine had been administered to the U.S. population. To date, the CDC has only detected two extremely rare safety problems with the vaccines. One of these is thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome that was linked to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is not approved for children. The other is anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, which can be effectively and immediately treated at a vaccination site.
Some may be surprised to learn that McDonald’s has become a vaccination site. While this is a recent development, the company partnered with the White House to help the vaccination efforts almost two months ago. In mid-May, McDonald’s announced that it was changing the design of its coffee cups to promote vaccinations and that it was providing vaccination information on its Times Square billboard.
Lastly, it’s worth noting that many of the food and drink items that are sold at McDonald’s are significantly more harmful than coronavirus vaccines themselves. In fact, an unhealthy diet causes over 500,000 deaths every single year in the U.S. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is the only vaccine that has been linked to any deaths. As of June 14th, this vaccine had been linked to three deaths.
