Emerging story
On Wednesday the President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated in his home near Port-au-Prince. Shortly after, the Clintons began trending on Twitter. While officials have released few public details on who may be responsible for the attack, social media users quickly began speculating about possible motives or guilty parties. Some began spreading rumors and implying that Bill and Hillary Clinton were behind the assassination, somehow connected to their highly-publicized Clinton Foundation.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found there is no evidence that the Clintons were at all involved in Moïse’s assassination. While the Clinton’s are not favored in Haiti, President Moïse had many enemies in the country itself. Political unrest has been brewing for some time for a variety of reasons.
Moïse had been accused of voter fraud during his last election; the country has been facing a massive humanitarian crisis with widespread economic strife, with malnutrition among children; fuel shortages uncovered political corruption in 2018. Amidst calls for Moïse’s resignation, protests have continued through 2021.
The Clintons have long been the subjects of unfounded conspiracy theories related to Haiti. They had little to do with protests leading up to the events of Wednesday but became tied to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Hillary Clinton was the United States Secretary of State at the time and her husband, Bill, was the United Nations Special Envoy to Haiti. The two played integral roles in reconstruction efforts, including bringing in their own Clinton Foundation to assist. The Interim Haiti Recovery Commission, which Bill Clinton headed, failed to repair the broken country, and a decade later citizens are still impacted.
Aside from dubious conspiracy theories, no evidence exists that the Clintons would assassinate a Haitian leader. Their foundation’s flaws have been widely investigated, and they have not hidden information.
