South Africa's Flag Was Displayed On Burj Khalifa in 2020
Burj Khalifa honors South Africa by lighting up to celebrate Freedom Day (FB).

The Claim

The Burj Khalifa was lit up with South Africa's flag to show support during current violent protests.

Emerging story

Following the current protests in South Africa, an image depicts the Burj Khalifa in Dubai lit up with the South African flag is circulating online. The Free Jacob Zuma campaign sparked protests after being arrested and sentenced to 15 months for contempt of court while under trial for corruption charges.

Misbar’s Analysis

MENA: The Burj Khalifa was lit up with the South African flag last year to commemorate its freedom day. The image was taken on 27 April 2020, which marks the first post-apartheid democratic elections in 1994.

The original image can be seen on The Burj Khalifa’s official Facebook page and pictured below, with the date (underlined in red) corresponds to the South African freedom day.

Given the findings, the Misbar team concludes the claim is misleading. The image circulating has nothing to do with the current violent protest in South Africa.
