Last week, viral photos of floods in Germany spread across social media. One photo of a BMW hatchback went viral due to the juxtaposition of a “Fuck You Greta” decal on the windshield. Referring to the young climate activist Greta Thunberg, comments ranged from, “Pic of the century #karma,” to, “Iconic.”

Misbar’s investigation found this photo to be manipulated. The decal was added later, causing the photo to go viral. The original photo shows the car, sans decal, wading through deep floodwaters in Germany. The caption in this photo was translated via Google translate to read, “With this BMW in the Wuppertal district of Beyenberg, the water is almost up to the edge of the window.”
The accompanying article discusses insurance liability for cars damaged in the flooding, including if the driver must operate the vehicle through deep waters.
Though this image has been photoshopped, the decal is a real product. Thunberg receives tremendously loud reactions to her calls for more environmentally friendly practices worldwide.
While those holding far-right political beliefs oppose the teenager, she continues to demand a focus on climate change. Though climate change is a controversial topic, floods such as those in Germany are expected to increase over time.
