The Claim

Publix banned Ben & Jerry's products from its stores.

Emerging story

Facebook and Twitter users are circulating an image of an announcement from US supermarket chain Publix saying it will no longer carry Ben & Jerry's because the ice cream company decided to stop sales in occupied Palestinian territories.

Misbar’s Analysis

Publix has not announced on Twitter or Facebook that it is ceasing sales of the company's ice cream, and its webpage dedicated to news releases makes no mention of Ben & Jerry's.

Various Ben & Jerry's products are also still available on Publix's website.

The fake announcement was shared as the company faces public pressure on Publix to ban Ben & Jerry's products from its stores.  However, the company's customer service Twitter account @PublixHelps wrote in response to questions over the claim's authenticity that they currently don't plan to remove Ben & Jerry's from their stores.

In a statement posted on the company’s website, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream said it would stop selling its ice cream in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, saying the sales are “inconsistent with our values”.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett told the head of Unilever that Israel will “act aggressively” against Ben & Jerry’s over the subsidiary’s decision to stop selling its ice cream in the Israeli-occupied territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
