Emerging story
In a recent tweet, by Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene claimed, “At least two Pelosi staffers tested positive for COVID this week and have been told to keep coming to work this week, and remain working in Speaker office,” she said, adding that her source was a member of Democrat staff.
The tweet soon went viral, gaining over 14,000 likes and 5,000 retweets within hours. A number of other Twitter users have repeated this claim. The tweet has also been reposted on other social media platforms, where it has gained thousands of interactions.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation concludes that this claim is almost certainly false, as Taylor Green has a long history of making false or sensationalist statements. It also contradicts the actions that Nancy Pelosi has undertaken to stop the spread of coronavirus within the U.S. government. For example, in March 2021, when most House representatives had been vaccinated, Pelosi chose to keep social distancing and keep mask mandates in place out of an abundance of caution.
If Taylor Greene is referring to the two individuals who tested positive for coronavirus on July 20th, 2021, then she is incorrect in at least two ways. Firstly, only one of those individuals was a Pelosi aide, and the other worked in the White House. Secondly, both of these individuals quarantined after the positive tests.
If Taylor Greene is referring to a more recent instance of staffers testing positive, then we could not back this statement up with any news source. Taylor Greene states that she received this information from a Democratic staff member source. If this source revealed this information to Taylor Greene, then they would likely have also revealed it to a journalist.
